Atagi Chapter NSDAR
Prattville, Alabama
The Atagi Chapter NSDAR was organized by Hazel Bozeman Phillips on April 21, 2012. In June 2011, Hazel Phillips asked to start a chapter in the City of Prattville. Six ladies met at her home on July 20, 2011, for the purpose of forming the first DAR chapter in Prattville. Thus, the ladies began recruiting interested women in the Autauga County area as potential chapter members.
The chapter selected Atagi, pronounced "Au-tau-gee" (which means "pure water"), as the chapter name in honor of a Native American village located in the late 1700s on the north side of the Alabama River at the junction of the river and Autauga Creek. The chapter was confirmed with 32 members on April 21, 2012. Atagi Chapter NSDAR chose the motto “We Love America and Our Patriots.” “Finding Purpose through Service” was selected as the chapter theme. Hazel Phillips served as the regent for one year; then passed the gavel to Mary Wyatt Buehler, who had served as the chapter’s first vice regent. The Atagi Chapter NSDAR continues the DAR tradition and values of patriotism, historical preservation, and education. The chapter actively participates in Constitution Week, supports the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, and works with active duty military and veterans in the Autauga area. |
